About the renovation

March 2019:
The renovation of Thorvald Hansen's Tower has now begun and will take at least a couple of months. The first step has been to sandblast the tower inside and out. The aim is to achieve the best possible base for subsequently repairing cracks and wear on the masonry surfaces and paintwork. Fortunately, Thorvald Hansen's cement/stone is of very good and hard quality. Otherwise, it would not have lasted 92 years. I must say that yesterday's strong winds blew my hair around at the top when I was cleaning up after sandblaster Johannes Clausen from Nordjysk Tag og Facade.
Next week, Viva Stilladser will set up a good working scaffold for bricklayer Stig Bech and for Flügger Læsø. I can assure you that we will strive to ensure that the colour scheme remains the same as before – neither the tower nor life should be grey.

Inside, Læsø Service by Bernhard Nielsen will replace woodwork paid for by Læsø Brand Forsikrings Fond. Flügger will paint – Flügger has donated paint, Stig will do the bricklaying, Øens VVS will fix the drains, and Østerby-El will do the electrical installations. Vesterø Bedding by Thomas will do the steel structures, and I will do the tidying up and offer good advice :-)
The old display cabinets must be renovated and the information and texts made legible. The website and FB Thorvald Hansen will tell the story of Thorvald and his old fine tower.
LAG-Læsø has provided a 50% subsidy for the renovation costs.

As Realdania did not consider the renovation worthy of support as a "Underværk" (underground treasure), we will probably have to raise the admission fee to DKK 20 for adults and DKK 10 for children. Children from Læsø will continue to be admitted free of charge and will no longer need to collect used matches or ice cream sticks as payment.

See the story and more in the article about Thorvald Hansen in the Læsø Museum's 2018 annual report, which will be published in connection with the Læsø Museum Association's general meeting on 25 March. Membership includes a free annual report and free admission to the Læsø Museum's exhibitions.

Private and other donations can still be deposited into the Tower's account 7402 0001004184, marked "prepaid admission." There will still be polite self-service with 24/7 access to the tower with payment in Mælkespand or on Mobilpay at 40420505.

A starry moment on a winter night with the Milky Way close by is sure to be a big hit :-).

Come and enjoy yourself.

Towerkeeper Klix

Thorvald Hansen's tower has been in need of some TLC for a number of years, but potential buyers may have been put off by the uncertainty surrounding the scope of the task.
However, in 2018, Jess Jessen-Klixbüll, former director of the Læsø ferry, acquired the tower and the house attached to it. With the help of foundations and volunteers, the plan is to renovate Thorvald Hansen's tower to its former glory, to the delight of both locals and visitors to the island...
